Memphis Airport’s largest capital project modernizes the 60-year-old Terminal B with seismic upgrades and expanded facilities while preserving the iconic martini-glass columns.
The Frederick W. Smith Terminal Modernization and Seismic Program represents the largest phase of Memphis International Airport’s comprehensive infrastructure upgrade, transforming Terminal B’s arrival and departure areas within the existing terminal footprint. Built more than 60 years ago, Terminal B will be modernized while preserving its original architectural character, including the iconic martini-glass columns that define the terminal’s mid-century identity. In partnership with Alliiance, UrbanARCH is responsible for the core and shell design, with Alliiance leading interior design.
The modernization features expanded open space in baggage and ticketing areas with improved passenger flow, a larger security screening checkpoint, and escalators and stairs relocated to the front of the terminal building. Critical infrastructure improvements include a new TSA in-line checked baggage inspection system and comprehensive seismic upgrades that make the structure significantly more resistant to earthquake damage given Memphis’ location in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Currently in development with construction anticipated to begin in 2028 and completion targeted for early 2031, this project continues the transformation of the Memphis travel experience that began with the modernized Concourse B in 2022.
